The Suffragette

This stained glass portrait would make the perfect present for an activist, feminist or otherwise principled woman. It’s my own design based on a 1908 photograph in the Dundee courier. I’d like to think she was dressed in purple, white and green, the suffrage colours

It’s made using the copper foil (Tiffany) technique with brass base and sturdy hanging line designed to take weights of up to 8.4kg. The outside edge around the neck area is strengthened with steel reinforcement so she’s sturdy.

Mary Molony was a young suffragette activist, best known for ringing a bell at a Dundee by-election every time Winston Churchill spoke. Churchill had recently spoken out against women’s suffrage and she was reported to have said “Who is the strongest — an Irish woman or Mr. Winston Churchill?” (Mary was born in Dublin).

Mary Queen of Scots

This stained glass, framed portrait of Mary Queen of Scots is 50cm x 39cm and ready to hang. It’s been made using the copper foil technique and has been hand drawn. She has the saltire – the flag of Scotland – behind her. It has a zinc frame which give it extra stability, and the blue of the saltire looks wonderful with the light shining through. If you look closely you might spot the iridescent glass I used for her skin.

Theresa Kachindamoto |stained glass portrait

I decided to make this portrait of Theresa in stained glass to raise awareness of the struggles in Malawi that continue today around education and the rights of girls. Like Jaha Dukureh, the issues she is trying to change are deeply rooted in her country’s traditions and although some of her peers are progressive, many are reluctant to change making her battle all the harder.

I chose Uro by Yough art glass for the headdress and jacket. It’s beautifully textured (but challenging to cut). I used the colours of the Malawi flag (black, red and green) as a background and it’s framed with lead with a hanging chain. It’s just a little smaller than A4 size.

Glass suncatcher | Glass window art

A one-off hand made skyline stained glass suncatcher with a beautiful selection of transparent, opaque, iridescent and textured glass. It has a solid base that allows it to sit on a window sill gently leaning against the glass; no need to hang and put nails in your window frames. Each one is different, but all will include a selection of beautiful glass. If you want a particular colour focus, drop me a note when you place your order. I use the tiffany (copper foil) technique where each piece is surrounded by a very thin layer of copper foil that the solder then adheres to.

Each one is between 22 and 25 cm long, and between 11 and 13 cm tall. They will be packaged securely for posting safely.

They will bring light and colour to your room, regardless of how much sunlight it gets. I love to have these suncatchers in north facing windows even though they rarely get direct sunlight.
