Just back from being EXHIBITED AT THE TRADES HOUSE GLASGOW, THEN WASPS CREATIVE ACADEMY INVERNESS AS PART OF THE CONTEMPORARY GLASS SOCIETY AND GLASS SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND’S TORIED – WHISPERS FROM THE PAST AND THE PRESENT EXHIBITION
Scotland has a terrible history of mistreating women accused of being witches, as depicted in some of the stained glass medieval art from the times. Not a famous stained glass artist but a witch, unknown until now; Katherine Casse was tried as a witch in Dalkeith on 10 September 1657, accused of 13 charges of witchcraft including a claim of satanic powers and causing death through cursing. Thankfully there wasn’t enough evidence of a verdict. Were any of these women really witches, or were they just ordinary women and girls? We shall never know.
You can see memorial panels of some of these women on the outside of Dalkeith library, painted by local artists. Caroline Peacock painted Katherine Casse, and I had to create her in glass with her fiery red hair and confident posture. Have a look at Issobell Fergussone who I made at the same time.
Based on my own drawing – to make a stained glass portrait you have to simplify some of the lines and detail and make sure you have no weak ‘hinge’ points that would cause the joints to bend. Katherine has been made using the tiffany / copper foil technique with a selection of transparent, opaque and textured glass. She comes with a hook to hang her from a window, or she can sit on a little wooden stand as in one of the photos. Stained glass window hangings can look great in any home.
