Scotland has a terrible history of mistreating women accused of being witches, as depicted in some of the stained glass medieval art from the times. Issobell Fergusson was tried as a witch in Dalkeith on 3 August 1661, accused of bearing the marks of satan. Were any of these women really witches, or were they just ordinary women and girls? We shall never know.

You can see memorial panels of some of these women on the outside of Dalkeith library, painted by local artists. Mary Blair painted Issobell Fergussone, and I had to create her in glass with her fiery red hair and confident posture.

Based on my own drawing – to make a stained glass portrait you have to simplify some of the lines and detail and make sure you have no weak ‘hinge’ points that would cause the joints to bend. These strong women have been made using the tiffany / copper foil technique with a selection of transparent, opaque and textured glass. She comes with a hook to hang her from a window, or she can sit on a little wooden stand as in one of the photos. Art noveau stained glass.
