Suffragette - Emmeline Pankhurst

You might have heard of Emmeline Pankhurst (1858 – 1928). She founded the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) which was at the forefront of the suffragette movement fighting for equal rights for women, with the slogan “Deeds not Words”. Women didn’t have the right to vote until 1918 and even then, only women over 30 (and men over 21) could vote.

To put it another way, her political activism challenged the institutions of the day and she was imprisoned a number of times, along with fellow suffragettes – including her daughters. In fact, hunger strikes and force feeding were common, and not surprisingly, some suffragettes did not agree with her hardcore methods. Nonetheless, a memorial statue of Emmeline was erected in London in 1930.. where it should sit has been the subject of some controversy:- https://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/emmeline-pankhurst-monument

My stained glass portrait of Emmeline uses the suffragette flag colours – purple for loyalty and dignity, white for purity and green for hope. Can you see from the photos how the iridescent hammered background glass sparkles in daylight? I made a zinc frame to give it strength and added a chain for hanging. It’s approx A4 size. I love making suffragette glass. I don’t want us to forget the work that went before us. You can read more on Wikipedia
