Frit lace is a fusing technique where you lay glass frit (finely ground pre-fused glass) on the kiln shelf and fire it for a short burst of time on a low temperature. I say a short burst of time, but it still has to stay in the kiln for around 12 hours. I say a low temperature but it’s still over 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit (over 700 degrees Celsius).

I learned about this during one of Warm Glass‘s online courses with the glass artist Kate Clements.

Normally when you fuse glass, you fuse it to a hotter temperature for a longer time and it melts and becomes smooth with no joins, gaps or jagged edges. Glass wants to fuse to 6mm thickness so if you lay out a single sheet of glass it will tighten up to become 6mm. If you lay out several layers of glass it will spread out until it reaches 6mm.

When you are fusing frit lace, you want the glass to pull apart. You don’t want it to bunch up to 6mm. You don’t want it to be smooth; you want to create texture and you want it to stay thin and delicate…but not so thin and delicate that it falls apart in your hands.

Back to the class. Kate showed us some work in her studio. One of the pieces stood out… Ophelia. It was sugary, delicate, shaded, ephemeral. Just beautiful. She took the frit lace technique a step further and showed us how to create graduated colour and how to control where you want it to pull apart.

But first, I had to practice…

Back to His Purple Badness. The moth was my third test piece. I have posted some of my first tests at the bottom of the post. Through these test pieces, I learned that my kiln runs a bit hot. I cut the temperature down for Prince as I wanted to keep that sugary texture. I used course frit for the hair and it’s got the most wonderful texture.

This time, I traced the drawing onto tracing paper then used carbon paper to transfer it onto the kiln shelf. It was such a hot day I decided to do this outside, but I had to sellotape the tracing paper and carbon paper onto the kiln shelf so it wouldn’t blow away. I went over the traced image with pencil and marked where the different colours would go.

Then I started placing the frit, slowly manoeuvring it into place and trying to keep a consistent depth.

Two special voices

I was paired up with two ‘voices’. First, Melissa, who is living with Type-1 diabetes. This was close to my heart as my dad had lived with T1D from a young age. Although his diabetes was well managed (my mum being a trained dietitian helped with diet adjustments, and his own medical training meant he understood the physiology), his eyesight and kidneys were affected and sadly he died before the age of 40. Monitoring and treatment have advanced significantly since then, with some improvements in life expectancy but it requires constant vigilance, and people living with T1D have to make so many adjustments and compromises every day.

Second, Mev. I didn’t know a lot about Mev other than she had initially been diagnosed with endometrial cancer at the age of 31. Her story is one of medical challenges and resilience, of knowing your own body and of not being afraid to make your voice heard. If you get a chance to listen to her podcast episode, please do.

Two stained glass portraits

The brief was to create an artwork to represent one of the women. Sammy had created an incredible series of photographs, ‘Scars of Gold’, using gold leaf to create a kintsugi (“joining with gold”) effect on the area of the body affected by the health condition. For Melissa, the gold wasn’t concentrated in one area. A glucose monitor and insulin pump are a permanent feature, and diabetes can affect many areas of the body – internal and external. For Mev, her hands covering her abdomen were the focus for the kintsugi. Her photograph showed her in a bold silhouette, her trademark hair so distinctive despite the effects of treatment.

I knew I wanted to make these pieces large. Mortal and Strong is all about voices and awareness and I didn’t think small, delicate pieces would suit the message. I started out with a plan to create Mel 1m x 75cm but this was going to be impractical. I couldn’t find a surface big enough to support such a large piece, so I reduced the proportions to 75cm x 51cm. I used Sammy’s Scars of Gold photographs as my inspiration as they are just so striking. This dictated my colour choices… black, grey and gold.

The puppy and the bubble wrap

I had to order lots and lots of glass…. four huge boxes arrived. Each box was filled with large sheets of glass wrapped in cardboard and oversized bubble wrap. Cue my new puppy who became adept at bursting the bubble wrap so it would fit in the recycling box. I took over the top of the dog cage and used offcuts of MDF to create a base. I measured out a frame to keep my sizing in check and began the long process of cutting, grinding, foiling and soldering.

I did think about using gold leaf on the glass and I had just completed a gilding course so I had all the kit. But when I tried it on Mel’s portrait, it didn’t look right on the glass; it was too subtle. After much trial and error (black glass on the back… clear glass…textured glass…I decided to use Amber Muranese glass to represent the gold instead. It has a beautiful flower pattern and is a delicate colour that looks incredible in the light. Mel’s piece had a lot of black and I used oceanside black opaque with grey behind it so that the silhouette would really stand out. As you can’t see through black glass, you can’t just trace your pattern on the glass directly. Instead, I printed out the pieces on vinyl. My Cricut machine only allows a max size of 27cm so I had to slice up the pattern into multiple pieces to print then stick together. This took way longer than it should have!

Hands!

Mev’s portrait came with a different challenge; hands! Stained glass hands are difficult. Take a look at your local church windows and you’ll see figures with hands hidden by sleeves or obscured by strategically placed sheep. The hands you do see are painted. I didn’t want to use paint because Mev’s hands had gold leaf on them so I wouldn’t be able to get much detail. I mocked up a couple of drawings using Glasseye 2000 and the hands either looked like skeleton hands or like they had been lifted from The Simpsons; I couldn’t use either. A conversation with my partner came up with the idea of an ethereal shape across the abdomen. As soon as I drew it, it looked right. Her Scars of Gold photograph had the lighter colours around the edge and the solid black for the body so the colouring was going to be the opposite of the first piece.

Both pieces are framed with zinc. This gives them strength. I was a bit worried about internal strength before I started considering the size of the pieces, and I considered adding copper restrip. This is a thin strip of copper that can be slotted between the glass pieces before it’s soldered together to give it additional strength. However, I made sure the designs had lots of curves and I was generous with the solder, both of which make sure they aren’t going to collapse inwards.

They were too big to sit on stands so I had to add wire for hanging. I twisted two strands of copper wire together so the weight wouldn’t be a problem and it would still be flexible enough to adjust to hang on a single nail or two nails. I soldered a good few inches of wire onto the zinc to make sure it would hold the weight without budging.

Edinburgh to Norfolk to London

Then the issue of transport… they had to be delivered to Norfolk a couple of weeks before they were being taken to London with the rest of the artworks. I thought about driving them myself (I live near Edinburgh), and my partner offered to take them for me. But it would be a 7-hour drive each way so this was a bit impractical. I found an artwork courier company who would collect, pack and deliver them, with insurance. I won’t divulge how much I paid for this, but it’s £10 short of what my first car cost…

Then I didn’t hear from the courier company for days…and days… and the deadline for them arriving in Norfolk came and went. Oh, the stress. Easter weekend had intervened so the phone wasn’t answered and my emails were ignored. Fast forward to the next week and they arrived safely, packaged securely… phew.

The Mortal and Strong Exhibition

The exhibition is being held at the Sidings Waterloo between 9th and 17th May 2025.

The brief was simple; use your own design, leave the edges raw as they will be leaded during assembly, and make sure it fits the template.

I drew a suffragette with a big hat and the suffragette colours as a background; purple for dignity, white for purity and green for hope. These colours were used in particular by the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and can be seen on lots of suffragette imagery.

It’s hard to imagine that 100 years ago most women were not allowed to vote in the UK. But it wasn’t just women; prior to the Representation of the People Act 1918, only 58% of the male population could vote. This is because you had to be resident in the country for 12 months before the general election, so many soldiers were ineligible.

But it wasn’t until 1928 that women were finally given the same voting rights as men when the Equal Franchise Act 1928 was enacted. The UK was a little late to the party; Hawaii had universal suffrage in 1840 (although this was reversed in 1852), New Zealand granted women the right to vote in 1893, and the colony of South Australia in 1895. It wasn’t the last either, women gained the same voting rights as men in France in 1944, Greece in 1952 and Lichtenstein in 1984. The Vatican City is still an exclusively male conclave composed of male cardinals – other Vatican citizens are not allowed to vote. So there is still work to do.

Why did I make this wolf in stained glass?

I was asked to make a stained glass wolf for a customer who had previously commissioned me to make large and small pieces. Never having made a wolf before, I was a little nervous.

I had looked at stained glass dogs and other animals on t’internet and although some of them were good, there were many many more that looked awkward and a little like those bad taxidermy photos (if you’ve not seen them, take a look at @craptaxidermy on Twitter or @terrible.taxidermy on Instagram). I said I would have a go at drawing out a cartoon and take it from there. The only stipulation was that the wolf had to have blue eyes. The customer sent a photograph of the kind of wolf they were looking for; a striking brown wolf with piercing blue eyes.

Saying no to custom requests

Custom pieces are very much a collaboration between the customer and the maker. This is what makes them unique and makes sure the customer gets what they want. This means sometimes you have to say no; I had to say no to a request to make a scaled up version of my ribbons/stalactites to span a long hallway; 8 foot shards of glass in a high footfall area of a house seemed a little impractical. As a customer you also have to be prepared to say no when something doesn’t meet your brief.

Design stage

I usually start by drawing freehand but for this one I decided I could use the picture to trace the actual shapes then scale it up using Rapid Resizer. This was because I was really not confident about drawing a wolf…Bad taxidermy was to the forefront of my mind. You’ll notice I don’t usually add detailed facial features I did this and printed out the picture, sticking together sheets of A4 paper to make a full wolf’s head.

The importance of scale

Because the stipulation was that it had blue eyes, this was my starting point for sizing. I didn’t want the eyes to be tiny; they had to be a focal point. This meant the piece would have to be a reasonable size – at least 40cm. I gave an indicative price at this stage, including design and drawing time, production time and materials. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be free-form with hanging loops attached beside the ears, or whether it should be framed. I gave two price options and we agreed framing would probably be best.

How glass breaks

When you are making something from glass, it’s not enough to just draw lines as you see them. Glass likes to break in straight lines so part of the design process is turning the image you see into a pattern that would work with glass. I sent a photo of my first drawing that was based on a tracing of the image sent… and I’m very glad his comment was that it looked a little like Elvis. He was right; the face just didn’t look right.

Elvis isn't a wolf...

Back to the drawing board, this time without the wolf photo as a constraint. I made it fairly symmetrical, although I’m not really a fan of symmetry in my own work so it wasn’t exact.; I didn’t want it to look computer generated. I started with a pencil drawing then created the cutting lines using a sharpie. Again, I scaled it up to size and sent a picture. Much better.

Wolf cartoon with cat for scale

Once the majority of the face was assembled we agreed that amber glass would be used for the surround. I had initially thought blue (like the eyes) would work but once I saw the wolf’s face the amber seemed to suit much better – the customer agreed.

Eyes – so much drama!

The most difficult thing about this one was the eyes. Using blue glass is one thing; making it look like eyes is another! I tried fusing glass – layering white on black on blue. All that happened was the whole lot fused into a little ball… I couldn’t get the temperature/timing right no matter how many times I tried. I tried glass pebbles. They stuck out too much so I ground them flat on the back, but they still looked like they were popping out.

Paint, dry, paint, dry, repeat

So I went back to the blue glass and this time I painted colour onto the back of the glass to create the colours of the iris. My partner had suggested this ages ago and I wasn’t sure I could do it, but this turned out to be the best option once I realised the paint should be on the back, not the front of the glass. Layer by later, I added greens, browns and blues. Each layer dried for 24 hours and after the final layer I dried it in the oven to set the paint permanently. The finishing touch was a blue swarovski crystal on top of the black pupil creating some additional reflection.

After this was all assembled I framed it with zinc came which I prefer to lead. You can see some different approaches to framing & hanging here in my gallery.

Lead is flexible to work with whereas zinc is inflexible.

Zinc comes in 2m lengths and I used to use a hacksaw to cut it which took forever. Recently I switched to a mini angle grinder which cuts it in seconds. It’s a bit of a faff drawing out the shapes to cut, but it gives a nice solid finish.

The glass sits in a channel inside the zinc and you then solder all the seams onto the zinc to keep it secure.

Scrubbing the zinc with wire wool gives it a great finish.

I made hanging loops from strong copper wire and soldered these inside the zinc channel so they won’t come off.
